Antique J S Fry & Sons Cocoa specimen box
Antique J S Fry & Sons Specimen Box
A nice example of a wooden J S Fry & Sons specimen cocoa box.
By reference to the '60 medals', research indicates that this example is from the mid 1890s. Fry's attained their total of 60 'prize medals' in 1893 which was surpassed by the end of that decade.
Unfortunately none of the specimens are still present but the box in is robust condition and the internal label still a striking colour.
There is obvious evidence of age and wear as would be expected with an item of this material and age (see images). The old split to the lid was previously repaired with two strips of wood screwed across the gap (screw holes remain). A more recent and sympathetic repair by way of pegging and gluing has resulted in a strong join whilst respecting its history.
A most decorative and collectable piece of social and commercial history. A highly visual display case for some treasured objects perhaps.
Dimensions approx. W. 45cm D. 23cm H (closed). 10cm
