Antique oak box
An antique oak box with hinged lid.
The colour and simple construction suggests an early date (possible 17th or 18th century).
The circular marks to the lid suggest it was originally screwed down to prevent access. Those holes (and the corresponding holes to the sides of the box) appear to have been filled with dowels many years ago as they have clearly aged with the rest of the box. Having an ecclesiastical feel, the slots to the lid further suggest the possibility of it being an old alms box of simple construction (no locks).
Dimensions (approx) Length 32 cm, Depth 11.5 cm, Height 10.5 cm.
