Large Painted Wooden Sign - WI 1920
A large painted sign for the Women's Institute 1920 and a wonderful piece of social history.
The WI's origins were in Canada 1897. The first UK meeting of the WI was in Wales in 1925. It is a charitable organisation which has remained popular and relevant into the 21st century.
St Newlyn is a village in Cornwall. The branch at St Newlyn East appears to have been formed just five years after the first UK meeting. This branch of the WI no longer exists.
This painted wooden sign which was no doubt fixed to the WI meeting place, is well constructed and robust. Whether it it is contemporary with the date, I cannot say but it has had some 'running repairs' in the past to the top rail and to small areas of paint loss. Little attempt appears to have been made to disguise the repairs.
The background is best described as cream or 'magnolia'. There is a slight green tinge to the images which is not accurate.
Dimensions are approx: 96 cm x 65 cm x 4 cm.
